Bad times on the starship Von Braun
It’s been a very long time coming, but System Shock 2 is finally free of the legal limbo that’s held it trapped for far too many years. At 6AM Eastern time on 2/14, GOG.com is going to have System Shock 2 available for sale at the ridiculously cheap price of $9.99. There’s also going to be a Steam release at some indeterminate point in the future, although the thought of waiting any longer isn’t a particularly good one.
The reason this matters is because System Shock 2 is one of the single finest PC games ever made, combining RPG and FPS in an incredibly deep fashion. The character you create and the skills you choose directly effect what you’re gameplay options are, and nobody will be able to do everything. Strong psychic abilities and amazing gun skills? No, pick one and learn to love it or you’ll end up as jack of all trades, master of none. System Shock 2 also has a fantastic world, one of the best villains in gaming, and a truly memorable storyline. As an added bonus, it’s old enough to run on just about anything in its original form but mod-able enough to look great on a current-day machine. Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing the last section of the game run at a better framerate than (literally) the 0.3 FPS of my initial playthrough 14 years ago.
